Paper Piecing And Post Pondering

They don't mix.

I've never tried paper piecing before.  But I wanted to make this:

... and paper piecing is part of it.  So I learned.

I also learned I'm not as smart as I like to think I am.  I looked up a short tutorial on paper piecing and read it but felt it was just too simple to practice.  What's the big deal?  You line up your fabric and sew on the line.  Easy.  Why waste time practicing.  Just start the pattern.  Well.  Not a big deal, BUT YOU HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION.  If you make a mistake you can't pull out the stitches so you have to start over.  So, no thinking about what where this quilt will go, or what the next project will be, or even about the next seam.  It took four "start-overs" before I finally learned that lesson.

Fusible applique is also involved.  I've done applique before but not much.  The "to protect your ironing board" part of the instructions seemed another waste of time.  From what?  I found out. And now I have a new ironing board cover.

But, if you take your time and follow the directions you get results you just can't get any other way.  It's just soooooo cute!   Only part of it is finished but I couldn't wait to show it off.

I've been wondering about paper piecing. I think maybe I don't know what it is. When I was making the house quilt, i made a square of freezer paper for each finished block, then dree the seam allowance on them, so all the blocks would be the right size. Is that paper piecing? there are really small and narrow pieces on your finished piece and all straight and square - I'm so impressed!!

Lois.... "thank you, thank you, thank you" bowing low and blushing
Cara.... it sounds like it if I'm understanding what you are saying. If you click on the second picture you'll see the pattern and can see the seam lines that were sewn.

I love paper-piecing and I don't think what Cara is describing is paper-piecing. I find that with paper-piecing, people either love it or hate it...there seem to be few "in-between". It is tricky but once it "clicks" in your head, it becomes very easy and fun as you can make things that would otherwise not be made too easily (if at all). Yours, so far, is turning out very nice, Kathleen!

I like to paper piece but it does take a bit of concentration for me to do it but it is a lot of fun. I like what you have so far.

I love it and the detail is wonderful. I especially love the little door handle. I've only sewn one paper piecing project but I have to say I really liked it. It is, as you say, not very forgiving in terms of ripping it out and fixing something.

Impressive Kathleen!!!! It is turning out very beautiful. I have seen that pattern in a catalog, and I like it too.... I will be following your progress with great interest! :)

Thanks for stopping by and leaving the kind comment on my published Pieceful Garden.

That pattern is just darling and you're doing a great job! I love to paper piece, but I have to be in the right frame of mind since I do have to think about what I'm doing...no mindless sewing. To me, the results speak for themselves when you turn out such a detailed project with such precision. You go girl!
